This is a fifth-floor apartment for a journalist/correspondent for the newspaper “El País” located on Paseo de San Juan in Barcelona’s Eixample district.
One of the premises of the assignment was the need to store a huge number of books from her library.
Furthermore, the apartment was typical of Barcelona’s Eixample district, narrow and long, with a patio in the middle.
The project involved two main operations.
The installation of a bookshelf along the entire dividing wall, so that all the books could be stored, lining that long wall, which also served as acoustic insulation.
The windows (in their full height) were brought inward by sectioning the ceiling. This operation creates staggered ceilings, which, combined with the fact that the partitions don’t reach all the way to the top, allows light to penetrate along the corridor, creating more and less illuminated areas above the library/corridor.
